The documentary film Third Act is more than a biography retrospective. It's a profound, intimate exploration of art and activism, as well as the complicated beauty of a father-son relationship. Directed by Tadashi Nakamura, the film shines a spotlight on his father, Robert A. Nakamura, a figure who "Generations of artists call… 'the godfather of Asian American media,'" but who his son simply calls "Dad". Initially conceived as a career retrospective, the film evolves into something deeply personal when Robert is diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Tadashi spoke of the responsibility he felt taking on the project, stating, “My whole life I always knew I had to make a film about my father,” adding, “I don't want his work to be forgotten.” A Variety review calls the documentary "A lively and moving portrait of a family that recognizes that despite all the hardships they have survived, they are lucky to have accomplished so much and luckier to be together," while also praising Tadashi for emerging as "a confident and powerful documentarian himself.”

Robert A. Nakamura’s substantial influence on Asian American media is central to the film. The trauma he experienced as a child incarcerated at the Manzanar internment camp during World War II fueled a life of activism, leading him to pivot from being a successful photographer to a filmmaker and getting involved in the anti-war movement during the 1970s. His 1972 short film Manzanar laid the groundwork for future generations of Asian American filmmakers to share their stories from their own unique perspectives.

Third Act is ultimately a powerful, multilayered story about how a painful past informs a passionate life, and how a son continues the legacy of an iconic father. We look forward to some deserved recognition for this film come Oscar time.
